At some time or another most growing small business owners need to hire some help to run their business. For a small business owner, it may not always be easy finding the perfect employee. In fact some owners think that they have to give out employee gifts to find people who are well-qualified for the job at task. If you are a small business owner and you find yourself needing to hire some more help, here are some helpful hints to get you through the process. Don't expect to be able to find someone who is exactly like you. Everyone you interview for the job is going to have different personalities and mannerisms. This should not scare you away from hiring an employee. Instead of finding a person just like you, find one that shares your goals and enthusiasm. Of course, find a person who also has knowledge about the job. It should be someone that you will get along with on a professional level, but does not need to be someone who becomes a close friend. Sometimes, choosing a person who is not at all like you actually complements your work even more, making your business even more successful. Before you post an advertisement for help wanted, be sure you know what job and tasks that you want this person to perform. This can always change in the future as the employee grows with you, but be sure for now, that you have organized what exactly the responsibilities of the job will be. If you want someone who is going to come up with new ideas for promotional gifts and run the giveaways for the business, then you want to find a person who has marketing skills or public relations skills. Another factor you need to consider is where and when will the person work. Is this a telecommuting job that they can work on their own flexible schedule or do you want a person in the office from a regular 9-5 work schedule? Be sure to figure out all aspects of the position before you begin interviewing candidates. Give yourself plenty of time to find the new hire. If you want someone working by the 20th of the month, then don't put out the advertisement on the 15th and expect to have someone hired on time. It can take anywhere from at least a week to four weeks to get potential candidates, pick out the best ones, interview them and then finally hire the employee. Make realistic goals for the hiring schedule or you may rush into the decision and regret your choice. Set up a training program and employee information packet. Even if the employee information packet is only two sheets of paper, it is important to have. It should outline things such as: paid time off, reviews, incentive programs, disciplinary information, payment information, and the basic job outline and description. The training program may be as simple as an outline of what needs to be done every day for the business. If you hire a person that is less experienced with your business and processes that you use, you may need a more extensive program to teach them the different aspects of the job. Being prepared and having realistic goals for your new employee can help guarantee that you hire the right person to help your small business succeed. |
