Four Tips for Effective Awarding & Employee Recognition
Just like with anything else at your company, you must establish written guidelines and step by step instructions on who is eligible to receive a corporate award. Outline what types of behaviors, performance and actions are required to receive a corporate award, then do the following:
Why?
Both the employer and employee should clearly know why the award is given. Not only does this make it clear to all involved, but it also sends a signal to other employees as to what constitutes praise and recognition.
Remember Everyone
Be sure that the managers are looking out for the same behaviors in other employees to continue the trend of awarding. Everyone must be on the same page and no one can be left out in receiving an award. Each employee who operates on the same level of standard of the first corporate award given should then be recognized.
Be Spontaneous and Fast
Don’t wait until two weeks after the good behavior to remember that someone gets the award. Be on the lookout daily for certain performances and be ready to award right away. Awarding should happen as closely to the good work as possibly to keep it fresh and make the awardees know that you are paying attention and feel lik you actually care.
Put the Peers to Work
Let the peers decide who gets the award as opposed to management. Sometimes, accolades coming from management are not effective, as it may seem like there is favoritism. If the peers decide, the corporate award seems that much more meaningful.
